You ever get that golf bug? You know, the bug that just hits you out of the blue, and you have to go to the golf range or better yet, run off to the golf course. A lot of times though, it hits you, and you want only to go play a good, challenging golf course.
These are the times you give your old golfing group a call. You hope to get the old foursome back together so you can hit it around course. You get excited to hit the course and play some good old golf, but now you have some decisions to make. Lets say all the players in the group want to do something to keep it interesting and keep their focus off of the bad shots they hit and more directly on having fun with their friends.
A short description of a skins game is the golfer with lowest score on the hole wins that hole. If you tie, there are no winners for the hole.
If player A, B, C and D are playing skins for a buck per hole (no carry overs to keep it simple), and player A makes a par, while players B, C and D all bogie the hole then player A wins the hole and the other players (B, C, D) owe player A a buck each, so player A made 3 bucks on that hole.
While playing skins you can also select golf teams prior to teeing off. For example player A and B are on one team while player C and D will be team mates. You have a few more options on how who wins the hole is determined. When playing with teams, you can continue with the low ball on the hole wins for his / her team, and you can have a combined score for another point on the same hole. In other words, there are two games going on for the same golf hole.
Example: A and B are golf team one. Players C and D are golf team two. On hole number one, player A makes a 4, player B makes a 7 (4 + 7 = 11), player C makes a 5 and player D makes a 5 (5 + 5 = 10). What happens? Well, if you are playing low ball and combined, there are two games going on for every hole. In this scenario, golf Team one wins low ball because player A had the lowest score of 4; however golf Team two wins the combined score because players C and D's combined score was 10 where golf Team one's combined score was 11, so the hole was a wash, 1 golf Team wins the low ball game and the other wins the combined score. This can get a little confusing if you haven't ever played skins or some divertive of it, but it is a lot of fun and keeps the guys on their toes. It means no one can give up on a hole because they must still contribute to their teams combined score.
Pressing
When you are playing skins, there is a concept known as pressing. Pressing is doubling the current bet; it's like saying "double or nothing". For example, if you are playing for a buck and there is a press, the next hole and every hole after that will be two bucks per hole.
The typical rule with pressing is all players must agree, to prior to teeing off, if pressing is even allowed. The most common way to handle presses is that only the person losing the hole can press and he/she must accept the press in order for it kick in. For example, if player A wins hole number one, player B can say I press, which is like saying double or nothing, but in order for it to kick in player A has the right to say, no.
Remember golf is for fun. Find games to play with your group that will keep everyone engaged. Keep your rounds to 4 hours or less, be courteous and always follow the rules.
